John McGill, County Down, Ireland
Posted by: Stephen Matthews (ID *****2911) Date: September 03, 2012 at 19:28:45
  of 1608

My immigrant, 5th Great Grandfather, James Matthews, Sr., married Mary McGill aka Magill, etc. James arrived here in 1718 from N. Ireland, Co. Down, where there were several McGills as well. We are originally from Wales but removed to Ireland in 1608. I am trying to find out the parentage of both James Sr. & Mary McGill. The most likely suspect is John McGill, less than 20 mi. from where we were in Co. Down. John was in Dromore, Co. down 1712-1716. There was another John McGill another 10 miles south, in Rathfriland, Co. Down. They may have been Sr. & Jr. James Sr. & Mary McGill were likely married by 1730. I have the names of their family. A 3rd John McGill was located in Ballyeaston, also Co. Down & listed as a Ruling Elder, 1719. Ballyeaston is about 22 mi. north of where the Matthews family was located.
