Here is my theory on the John and Mary question. I think there is a distict possibility that John, the one who was married to Rebecca was their son. I understand that no land grants have been found stating that John and mary settled in Virginia or that their son John and his wife settled there either; has anyone looked into the possibility that they stayed inside some sort of settlement and that they were there trying to decide where to go next? It is not inconceivable that something happened to John Sr., Mary and Sarah or that John didn't find love again with Rebecca. It could be that John Jr. did not choose to stay in Virginia because of the hardships he may have endured there and that he went on to Pennsylvania and decided that he wanted to purchase land there. Virginia is fairly close to Pennsylvania and I am sure that according to the maps of Virginia and Pennsylvaina during the time of the French and Indian War,and where the boundary line between the two states where at that time, that travel between the two would have been highly probable. Based on theory, mind you, it could have been entirely possible that John and Mary did travel with their son John from Ireland and just weren't able to set down roots and that is a possible reason why there are no records of a John McGinty in Augusta,VA.
