DANIEL MACKGIRT (McGirt) 1699 near Ashland, Hanover Co VA
McGIRT Searchers,
FYI, One DANIEL MACKGIRT had a Patent for 1576 acres of land on the "branches of MACHUMPS CREEK" in St Peters Parish, New Kent County, Virginia (Patents 9:227, Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers III:31).
This is likely the modern "MECHUMPS CREEK" which rises just east of the town of ASHLAND, VIRGINIA (about 15 miles north of RICHMOND City center), and flows easterly by south just below present-day HANOVER Courthouse.Hanover County was formed in 1720 from New Kent County.
An early patent or two also mentions MACGIRT's (sp?) PATH somewhere south, maybe southeast of the town of ASHLAND.
I note in some of the McGIRT GenForum postings here a mention of LOYALIST ancestors, favorable to the King of England during the Revolutionary War.Some of the neighbors of DANIEL MACKGIRT early 1700s near ASHLAND, VA, were QUAKERS.QUAKERS were generally loyal to the British government, and refused to fight with the Revolutionary Patriots, and would not help them in any way.Wondering if DAN here OR his possible family may have been QUAKERS, and thus eventually LOYALISTS.
Also a few miles to the west of ASHLAND is a place called SCOTCHTOWN.Not sure where that place got its name, but you can probably count on MACKGIRT being a Scottish name.
Maybe some of you folks can "connect the dots" to your later families in South Carolina. If any of you read this posting and pick up on this theory, I would be interested to hear from you, just to know that my info here may have gone somewhere.
I am not a descendant of this family, just hoping this will help.
