McGowan family of New Jersey and New York

My grandfather, James D. McGowan, and his two sisters, Alice and Mary were orphaned in 1865 after the deaths of their parents Robert and Elizabeth Platt McGowan. Alice ended up in Iowa by way of Chicago. Mary also lived in Chicago, and as far as we know, never left. Mary did not communicate with her siblings and no one knows what became of her. The last mention I have of Mary in Chicago was in the 1910-1920 period. Census records show a Mary McGowan in 1870 in a New Jersey orphanage. Ten years later Mary McGowan, an orphan, attended St. Paul's Industrial School in Brooklyn. There's no guarantee if this is my great aunt, but it's all I've been able to unearth. My goal is to establish where in Ireland Robert McGowan came from and then try to communicate with his family there. Any help in my search would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
