OK! I find the family in the 1900 US census and Ann stating that she is a widow so then I say McGOWAN is her married name.
224 Sumner Street

Ann Dec 1854 6/6 children living IRELAND
James March 1877 Massachusetts
Mary Ellen Dec 1881 Massachusetts
William Mar 1886 Massachusetts
Annie Mar 1885 Massachusetts
Margaret May 1887 Massachusetts

Yr of immigration given as 1872

Husband/Father born Ireland

It would appear that Mr McGOWAN died after Sept 1886.
There is a margin note in the census referring one to "line 66 for 3x family" Then at line 66 which is the next page it refers back to line 44 where we find Ann McGowan. Family of line 66 is an individual named Eugene Sullivan born Mar 1820 Ireland.

I researched and found the following. Let me know if it matches anything else that you may have.
