This sounds VERY similar to the story I have of my great-great-great grandfather, Patrick Joseph McGreevy, who was born in Roscommon. From what I know, he fled from Roscommon, Ireland with his first wife (I don't know her name), they moved to New Jersey, had a son, Peter Joseph McG. The mother may also have had a daughter named Catherine before she passed away. It's not clear whether Catherine is from the 1st wife or the second. Patrick Joseph moved to NYC, remarried and definitely had a son Joseph with the second woman. I've been searching for records on Patrick Joseph and there don't seem to be any immigration records. I believe this is because he 1) changed his name since he was a "wanted man" or 2)was a stow away. If any of this sounds familiar to you I would love to chat! I apologize if it's not!
