Laura,though I can't help you on your immediate ancestry, it is extremely likely that the McGruders are Scots rather than Scots-Irish. The McGruders lived from at least 1450 onwards near Crieff in Perthshire, Scotland. Though it is possible some of them may have gone to Ulster about 1680,the main branch of the family stayed in Scotland under the names McGruther, and McGrouther. Another variation now appears as Magruder in USA. Have a look at their site on Genforum for much discussion on the name. Regards, Don.
