The McHale name is well known in North Mayo and also there was a famous Archbishop with the name. The N Mayo people from the Kilala Bay area settled in and around Lucerne Co and Wilksbarre, Pa. On a townland called carrickanass in n. co. mayo there lived a man by the name of Farrell McHale/ one was his mother's surname and the other his father's. He inherited his mother's land and the locals identified him using her surname.
