Margaret McHale, 1854.

My grandaunt, Margaret McHale, travelled from near Louisburgh, County Mayo, Ireland, via Liverpool to New Orleans in 1854. She disembarked safely but was never heard from again. Her father placed an advertisement in the Boston Pilot in an effort to trace her. It was said that he also engaged Pinkerton's detective agency to search. It is a story that has fascinated my family ever since.
Can anyone give me a clue where to start looking, or is it a lost cause? Thank you.
