John Hector Mckechnie was my maternal grandfather. Born in Lady Mary Row, Campbeltown, Scotland in 1878. He was a cabinet maker and in the first World War he was a piper in the Scots Guards. His father was Hector (a distillery workman) and his mother was Margaret nee Elliot. I believe he had older brothers, Andrew and maybe one other and also Archie. Archie emigrated to Australia (date unknown) where he was first a policeman and later a detective with a railway company. I have a letter which he wrote to his brother John dated 16th February, 1913 from 33 Lord's Place Orange Australia. I believe that John's grandfather (name unknown), was a ships carpenter and travelled to Valpariso in South America. When I was little John,(my grandfather) used to tell me tales of his grand father and I believe that he was buried at sea. My mother, Phyllis Letitia Smith, recently died and amongst her papers I found John's birth certificate and his surname on it was spelt McKechen. As the name of McKechnie has always been used I can only assume that McKechen is a mis-spelling. I would be glad to hear from anyone who has any information on any of the family who may now be still alive in Australia.
