I have not done much research in quite a while and had to go dig out some of my former work. I don't know how much I can be of help but this is what I have. My gggrandfather was William Scurlock and his daughter married John Mackechney who was born in Quebec, Canada on Aug.9, 1827. He was the son of John Machechney and Mary Steed. I show that he did have a brother named Gilbert born in Perth, Scotland on Oct.12, 1812. My info says that the father of Gilbert, John Mackechney drowned in Canada in 1832 and Mary died in 1834. In 1835, Gilbert was in Natchitoches, LA and filed for citizenship in 1838. It is my understanding that he took his brother John with him and they later settled in Sabine county, TX. My information states that Gilbert never married.
So while there are certain facts that would indicate that we are talking about the same Gilbert, I am not sure that we are in fact. I would love any info you might could share on the backgrounds of John Mackechney and Mary Steed as I don't have much going back to Scotland. Hope this helps.
