I am only talking about the Mckees buried at Versailles Cemetery. They SEEM to be on the wrong end of the Revolution. I think I know why this is. It has to do with very old records on how these families connect to the families in Southern Virginia and Europe.
You can do this two ways. One, to look at the original journals kept by the Samuel Washington family or you can guess on why these people are doing the things they are doing and why they are buried in the areas they are buried.
Remember, Samuel Washington was George Washington full brother. Then there are lots of records of the Washington family being in and out of Mckeesport from 1753 to 1804. A fellow named Christopher Gist, who lived at Stewart Crossing not far from Mckeesport, was a close personal friend of George Washington.
Christopher Gist was always with George Washington when he was in the Pittsburgh area. Both of them worked for Thomas Lord Fairfax and his cousin William Fairfax under the Ohio Company. I have a letter written by George Washington requesting an Medal for Queen Alliquippa's son. George Washington came to Pittsburgh to give the Metal to the Queen's son renaming him at that time William Fairfax. Chief John Logan had the same thing done to him when he was renamed John Logan.
Then George Croghan's daughter was married to Chief Joseph Brant. The Chiefs sister was married to Sir William Johnson and George Croghan was Sir William Johnson's nephew. It is interesting to note that George Croghan was the executor to the Gratz Brothers Estate. One of the Gratz son's named Benjamin Gratz was married to Christopher Gist's granddaughter Marie Gist. Then everyone seems to be connected to William Cooper the father of James Fenimore Cooper. William Cooper was the Mayor of Albany. This is why Historians believe Queen Alliquippa was from Albany. I believe she was from Southern Virginia.
Last George Croghan was Queen Alliquippa's Indian Agent. It is said George Croghan fell out of a boat at Brunot Island of Dr Brunot another Indian Agent at McKees Rocks and was killed. He hit his head on a rock. The water was not deep at Mckees Rocks as noted in Meriwether Lewis' Journal.
The center of Versailles Cemetery is where they reburied John McKee. His gravestone says he was the founder of Mckeesport. As with everything else, that may or may not be true.
