Yes, it is a coincidence, but a bigger one than you probably expected. Walter McHugh (bn 1833), grandfather to the great-uncle I was originally asking about, married an Ann Webb at St Giles in the Fields in August 1853; they are both reputed to have drowned when their ship hit an iceberg when they were emigrating to North America - this would have been 1871-1877 (I can't narrow it down any further). And my great-uncle Walter had a brother Albert (OK, it was a common name) who was born in Holborn in 1893 and was killed in France in September 1916.
