No need to apologize - we're all new at this in one way or another. My family, too, is from Dunbartonshire, but probably not Luss - more like Rhu, Helensburgh and the like.
I haven't tried it yet, but two thoughts come to mind, short of hiring a researcher (I can give you a good name at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, if you like). First, you may wish to go to the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society (if you know their URL you're ahead - I will have to get there via www.macfarlane.org, then Links, thence to the Society). If you use IE5 as a Browser, you probably can just type in the name of the Society in the Address window and the search function will display potential listings in the order of likely matches.
Secondly, I just found www.origins.net/GRO/, which allows you, if organized enough, to search all the GRO databases (effectively 15 searches in 24 hours from the time you pay 6 L on your credit card). Nevertheless, that may help.
If you do meet with sucess and would like to post your family tree on a specific McKinlay Web Page for further networking purposes, I'd be happy to help. You might wish to visit http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mckinlay/ It's free!
