Thornliebank to Hampshire Mckinlays- John Mckinlay 1878?

I've just recently started researching my family tree, and I'm currently on the trail of my great-grandfather. His name was John Mckinlay, born c 1878 in Thornliebank, Glasgow, though he's spelt Mckinley at Thornahonk on the 1901 England Census by which point he was in Hampshire! I know who he married, and who his children were (family still in the Hampshire area today), but I havent the foggiest idea how to track down his parents and family in Scotland. Can anyone give this newbie some points in the right direction?
