Carol
Thank you for the information on the McKnights. Since I did my original posting, I have found that Mary M Spain was not MCKNIGHT as I had been told by a granddaughter of David McKnight Spain. I looked for years and could not make any connection to Nathaniel Folsom who was Mary's gg grandfather.

Finally, I found that Mary M Spain was Mary Melinda HANCOCK, the daughter of Jubel B HANCOCK & Sophia MITCHELL and the pieces fell into place. She was born 14 Feb 1820 in Alabama in the old Choctaw Nation. Her mother, Sophia MITCHELL was the daughter of the Indian Agent, Samuel MITCHEL AND Molly FOLSOM, a daughter of Nathaniel FOLSOM and one of his two Indian wives. It is believed that Molly was born to I-AH-NE-CHA. However, in her citizenship statement to the Choctaw legislature Mary stated that her gg grandmother was the Indian wife Aiichihona. Since there were 20 some children from these two wives (who were sisters) it sometimes hard to sort out who belonged to whom.

The fact that Mary was vague about this relationship could be explained by the fact that very little is known about Molly FOLSOM, and depending on which family story you believe, Sophia MITCHELL either died or left Jubel HANCOCK and moved to Indian Territory. She is recorded there on the 1855 Choctaw payroll census with her husband Jesse TINER. She married Jesse TINER 22 May 1834 in Green County, MO.

I still don't know what the connection to the McKNIGHT is.
When the SPAIN family was living in Guadalupe Co, TX, they had a friend named David MCKNIGHT. I think they may have just named a son after him and somehow things got mixed up from there.

I have never found Mary M SPAIN'S name any other way except Mary M. This is the way it is on the Choctaw rolls and in all other records.

Thanks for your help. I am going to try looking for Thomas Spain in Alabama.
