Denise, this is all very exciting!I would love to compare notes with you.
First, is your John McLachlan "John Muir MacLachlan"?This is the name (and spelling) under which he married my grandmother, Lillian Dearing. But, she also said that he lied to her about many things. My mother may have their marriage license.I'll try to get it.
Second, I believe I can get his social security number from my mother, as he worked at architectural firms in Los Angeles, Amarillo TX and Dallas TX.Do you have any identification such as a social security number or places of employment in the United States?
Third, if these two Johns are the same, one of those five wives was my grandmother Lillian Dearing. They had two children, my uncle William Muir MacLachlan (killed in plane crash in 1969) and my mother Martha Jeanne MacLachlan still spry as ever and living in Texas. My grandmother died in 1980.
Also, we have long expected to find other wives. We heard from someone that one family was in Virginia. We had never heard Chicago.
The reason we have so little information is because he embezzled $3,000 in or about 1929 or 1930, and abandoned my grandmother, uncle, and mother, never to be seen or heard from again.Thirty plus years later, in order for my grandmother to remarry, Social Security looked for any other times he used his SS number, and found none. Then my grandmother either had him declared legally dead or got a divorce (don't remember which, as I was maybe 10 years old at the time), so she could remarry.(I think probably the divorce.)
After that, when I was in my twenties, my dad and mother went to Scotland researching John with Clan MacLachlan and in Aberdeen (where he supposedly was born) and in Edinburgh (where he supposedly was schooled). We still only have scant information until I saw your posted message.
Let me know if you still think they are one and the same and I will get some documents - my mother's birth cert., the marriage license, and the ss number.
I hope so, because this will do my mother's heart so much good!
