Hi Jim,

I am just doing this for fun, so haven't verified all of this info. This whole group of ancestors (all Washington lines), i.e.: Briggs/Warner/Howell/Custis/Justice/Cary/Slaughter/Wore/Chandler/Weems/Warner/Johnston/Muchmore/Ball/Jones/Whitaker/Lewis/Asbell/Fleming/Poindexter, Ransome/Willis, etc., like many researches know, lived near each other, married into each of the families many times. A whole lot of their descendants end up in Texas, where I am. Still together.

My grandmother was Birdie Briggs who m. Ralph William Abbott. While trying to find how my Abbott line connects to an ancestor past 1812, I have collected notes and posts and tried to figure out this huge puzzle.

The Howell Briggs line is probably where the Howell name comes in to the McLemores. Mildred Howell, dau. of Mildred Lewis and John Howell. There is also a Howell Briggs line, part of this group. Someone was asking about it?

At present, I have Margery Henshaw Gilliam listed, and think that she possibly married my John J. Finch,at least that is what I am seeing, not proven they are the same Margaret, but others suspect she is.

The Mary "Polly" Young collection has turned up as 3 total in my notes. I don't know if they are all the same woman, or not. One married a George Wright, I think it is, and one married (very likely) Adam Lawrence Jr.

Like I said, not all verified, but I am pretty good at directing someone into the right group to search. I just happen to be in a spot where so many of them merge, and have traced backwards and sideways (collaterally) on so many of these families. My mother's and father's lines meet laterally at Mildred Warner/Augustine Warner, both of them (my parents) descend from one of these people. They go back again to George R. Reade through the Millers, as well, and all the way back to two of the Plantagenet sisters, one from Eleanor, one from Joan in descent.

The Triplett/French/Miller/Shepherd lines also go through so many of these mentioned in my note to you.

At Mary Flood, I connect with her (Mary) at Col. John Washington (in the Brittish Briggs line), and also connect to Henry Briggs m. Mary Flood (her mother was Margaret Finch, and I wonder is she is the same as my Margaret Finch to Dr. John J. Finch?) and also connect at Col. John Washington m. Ann Pope to Lawrence Washington to Lawrence lines, as well.

And to Betty Washington to to Lewis to Asbell to Lawrence to Layne.

This is one huge, confusing puzzle I have going on here.
And in my search for my Abbott (Benjamin Franklin Abbott b. 1812 m. Caroline Pickett Willis) to Johnston/Muchmore lines...knowing that Pope's Creek and Bridges Creek are the same creek on Lawrence Washington property, and that my William Robert Briggs is from Scotland, and everyone I see online that says they are not the same BRIGGS lines, I still think they are, and connect to both.

That, BRIDGES is the immigrant version of BRIGGS is also interesting to me.

In the Briggs line, I descend from Judith Wroe m. William Robert Briggs. Their son: George W. Briggs m. Sarah McWhirter, whose son, Samuel McWhirter m. Paulina Kelton, whose son, Samuel Oscar Briggs m. Mary Eva Finch (dau. of Dr. John J. Finch and Martha T. Firsbey), whose dau., Birdie Briggs m. William Ralph Abbott.

In Layne line:
Martha Ann "Mattie" Layne m. Silas Alexander Abbott (father of Ralph William Abbott m. Birdie Briggs) Mattie Layne's father is Henry Inlough Layne m. Lucinda Lawrence (dau. of Adam "Ad" Lawrence m. Sarah Lucinda Miller (dau. of Maj. Col. Simon Miller and Sarah Lucinda Rucker), grandson of Adam Lawrence). Henry I. Layne is son of John THomas Layne and Mary "Polly" Crafton. This Layne line are the same family that ties to Joel Hinton Layne that connects to Whitaker and Cary lines. So do my Oliver lines, per Alexander Oliver, Rev. soldier. HINTON to Whitaker/Cary, as well.

John Thomas Layne also m. Charlotte Jones. He was b. 4-4-1760.

My father, Robert Layne Abbott's first cousin was a Lawhon. These same Lawhons (from Langherne) that tie to the Sally Harrison lines (and Landers/Poindexter) which tie to Lawrence/Oliver/Jordan/Weems/Abbott/Willis/Briggs, and many others in my family groups of TODAY.

I am pretty sure my Abbott line comes from a Custis/Justice group, but can't get there yet.
I have met some really nice people along the way, and a Whitaker/Cary, who I helped with her Justice connection, and now we know we connect at Joel Layne, John Whitaker (hope it is my stray Abbott there), Alexander Oliver, Mary Flood, and so many others that it makes our heads swim.

At present, to find my Abbott connector, I am weaving the Abbotts of OK, IA, MA, MD, VA, GA, IL,and the rest of the planet, it seems. This is a very slow process. :)

This weaving includes a neighbor to Ralph Justice and Ann Fairfax, Washingtons, etc. to Edmund Scarborough and Ann Toft 1 (Edmund) Scarborough, 2 (Daniel)Jennifer, 3 (John) Abbott.

My Abbott line connects to the John Russom Weems (brother to John Thomas) line, and John Thomas Weems m. Nancy Wilkens, dau. of Clarissa Dickens m Clement Wilkens, and I have a sneaky suspicion to Cary/Whitaker lines. The 2 Wemms are sons of Elizabeth Redfern and Capt. Thmas Scott Weems. They also tie to the Millstead/Key lines. It also connects to Robert E. Lee lines to Custis, and thus a dogleg to Justice/Abbott/Custis (still piecing that together).

So, I am sincerely hoping that someone out there, could benefit from my view of the big groups, and maybe, just maybe someone might have a copy of Grace Puryear's book, "McAnnelly Bend Drawstrings" which talks about the Willis family, and I might find a clue to my Abbotts through Caroline Pickett Willis. Perhaps someone knows something about Benjamin Franklin Abbott b. 1812 (NC/TN/GA?) moved to AL had William Augusta Abbott m. Nancy Jane Weems, dau. of John Russom Weems and Mary Ann Oliver (dau. of Alexander Oliver and Jane Killough). I have looked, collected data, inquired for 25 years...nada. I have also offered to, and done, many retouches to badly-damaged photos for anyone who can help in some way to find clues.

Thanks for reading this long note. I know it sounds like babble, unless you really have a grip on these groups.

Gayle
