It occured to me when I was out shoveling snow after posti ng the above that you meant the spouse of the McLin in question, not the spouse of the daughter, Margaret McLinn Herter. Sorry.
I know virtually nothing about Margaret's father, other than that he allegedly had some Wild West days connections. Margaret's son, George Herter, wrote about a McLin family that moved to his area in southern Minnesota after the Civil War, and I am guessing that McLinn = McLin or that the maiden name McLinn is a transcription error somewhere. In my family there are three different correct spellings of the last name.
