Samuel McMackin was my Great Uncle. He changed the spelling of his name from McMachan to McMackin because when he played baseball people spelled it that way and it was easier to leave it like that. His brother, 5 years younger, was my Grandfather, John Howard McMachan. There were 13 children in their family. Their mother was born in Dunkirk, NY after her family had emigrated through Canada from Ireland, then crossed Lake Erie to settle in Dunkirk. My grandfather also played baseball and returned to Dunkirk to play for the Dunkirk Defenders, and eventually settled there. I don't know how Uncle Sam died, only that he was quite young. I do have a photocopy of a picture of him when he played with a Paterson, NJ team in 1895. Honus Wagner is shown in the back row.
