Thanks for your reply. I am familiar with Joseph Washington McMains and James Ira McMains. They are cousins, two of many who settled in Texas. In fact, I have Joseph's Texas CSA pension records on my website.
Thus far, we have the McMains line traced back to Kentucky and Pennsylvania, but no further. Some of "us" cousins think that the line is Irish, some think it is Scottish. I've read an article suggesting that the name is Scottish, but I'm still looking for a definitive answer. I'm sure it is one or the other.
I've done a great deal of McMains research, including the family lines in Texas. Unfortunately, I have been unable to identify L.M and S.C McMains, whom I found while doing an exhaustive search of the 1920 census in Texas. My results are beginning to filter into my webiste entitled, "The McMains Research and Collaboration Site" at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hewes/index.htmlhttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hewes/index.html
I appreciate any information on either unidentified persons with the surname of McMains, or my own McMains cousins.
