If his middle name was Leo, I have most of the information to the 1700's. I have copes of federal census that show E. Leo McMinds (ancestry.com has it indexed as McMurdo) in 1930 that show quite a large family. I use the federal census to go back several generations (1850 typically being the most useful as it has all names)than I rely on good old fashioned research. I always look for a second confirmation. Guy Lynn McMindes (E. Leo McMindes father) has a WWI draft registration card that shows he was living in Greenwood NY June 5th of 1917. This pretty much tells me I have the right family i.e. a second confirmation (name, date, place)

btw odell and cady are families that are all around the mcmindes from very early on. I have info on these families also. The Odell's followed my line to California and McMindes and Odell are in the Lincoln Cemetary near where I live.
