John McMullan, John McMullan Jr and Alexander McMullan in Argyle New York
I would like to trace my paternal side as far back as possible starting with my great-great-great grandfather, James McMullen (1803-May 1885), who came from Ireland with his wife Rosanna (maiden name = Wilson) (1804 - Oct 1885). They both came to America and settled in Argyle, Washington County, New York from 1846 (or 1850) to 1869 where they then moved to Starr, Nevada with all of their children except one.
James and Rosanna had 4 children: Samuel Patrick McMullen (1834 to 1911), Louisa McMullen 1836 to ?) James McMullen jr.(1838 to ?), and Deborah (1839 to ?). James and Rosanna and his family are listed in 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 federal census but Louisa McMullen showed up only in the 1850 census.
Samuel McMullen was a laborer for the Hunt Family in the 1850 census.

I was interested in why they first settled in Argyle, New York so I researched and found several other McMullens listed in the Federal Census in 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 that may have been relatives but I have no evidence to support that any are related to James and Rosanna.
I have heard that James and Rosanna may have come from Wicklow or Monaghan in Ireland but again, I do not have any evidence to support it.
I did some more research and found that there were two John McMullan's and an Alexander McMullan with A's listed in the 1810 Census for Argyle, New York. Interestingly, they changed the spelling of their name to McMullen with an E by the 1820 Census.
So here is what I found so far in the Federal Census for 1810 to 1860. I think my family lineage of James McMullen was related to John Sr., John Jr. and Alexander McMullen in some way.
In addition, I traced Alexander to 1850 census and found his birthday was about 1771. He also had children named Ruben (born abt 1811) and Abram (born abt 1817 to 1820). Abram was married to Agnes (born abt 1831) and they had a son born in 1859 named Franklin.
I also found a Samuel McMullen who was listed in the 1820 census for Argyle where James McMullen's, son Samuel was not born until 1834. So Maybe this is the father or an uncle. I sure need some help tracking down these relationships in New York and to see if these are parents of James.
