Collection Scope: The Sutro Library has one of the largest genealogical collections west of Salt Lake City with extensive resources for states other than California and basic resources for California. The California Section of the California State Library, Sacramento, has more materials for California history and genealogy.

Library Catalog: The California State Library has its own online library catalog, but its holdings are also listed, along with those of the University of California libraries, on the MELVYL Union Catalog. The Web site of the California State Library, Sacramento, at has links to both online catalogs. You can also go directly to MELVYL at telnet:// or . Limit your search on MELVYL to holdings of both the Sacramento and Sutro branches of the California State Library by selecting Calif. State Libraries in the "Location box". You cannot limit the search to just one branch.
The California State Library at Sutro also maintains a copy of its online catalog on microfiche and a regular card catalog. The regular card catalog includes more extensive subject headings, like surnames and place names, than the online catalogs.
Reference Services: You may submit brief reference questions by mail, telephone, fax or e-mail. Remember that the genealogical resources held by the California State Library, Sacramento, focus on California, while those of the California State Library, San Francisco, (the Sutro Library) cover the rest of the country. Also, keep in mind that the primary mission of both branches is to serve the information needs of residents of the State of California. If you live in another state, you should see if a particular item is available nearby before requesting it from either branch of the California State Library.
Guides: The San Francisco Public Library's Web site at includes an overview of the Sutro Library's reference services and genealogical resources.
Copies: Library staff will do limited photocopying. In general, books published before 1925 may not be photocopied.
Circulation: Non-rare material may be checked out by California residents.
Interlibrary Loan: Non-rare materials may be lent to libraries within California.
