Dear Mr/Ms Dahm
Hi Chris McQuellin
Thanks for the enquiry.
I have copied my relevent data and it will follow at the end of mypreface notes..
I have not checked the arrivals in Sydney from the US but that may be a possibility especially if the briothers Philip and James had siblings in the USA. Just another thing to check. I have three different spellings of the surname but as Philip was a publican from early on after his arrival I would presume he could read and write. His brother James could not however. James's name has been recorded differently but his death cert (preparedby Philip as an informant) shows they had the same parents so go figure that!.
In Australia the immigration clerks were usually British and they spelt the names as they were sounded. It depend on the accents of the irish and how easily they were understood I guess.
Here is my info. - It would not suppose me to find some American family. Hope my info helps you - There is a free search of irish records on rootsweb I think - if i can find the link I will send it on to you.
I have a photograph of Philip McQuellin if that is of some assistance.
Regards Chris McQuellin Albury New South Wales Australia.
Philip McQuellin was a son of Patrick McQuellin (Farmer) and Bridget Kearns. They were from County Monaghan, Ireland. He was born in April or May of 1842. There is evidence that another son James, emmigrated to Australia, in 1879 or 1880. James was 35 yrs old at the time. James McQuellin (McQuillan) placed his mark on the marriage Certificate of Philip McQuellin to Ellen McNeill) Neither is on the UK assisted immigration list to 1844-1859. Later lists to be checked.
It is probable that Philip McQuellin arrived in Australia around 1868/69, at the age of 26/27yrs.(His death certificate states that he was in the colony of New South Wales for 28 yrs prior to his death. He was the publican at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in central Sydney when he married Ellen Adeline McNeill at St Mary's Cathedral on 22 June 1880.(Philip was 38yrs old when he married Ellen 28yrs .) This Hotel used to stand on the corner of Clarence and Erskine Streets Sydney, (His surname then was spelt as McQuillen on the insurnace records). Research of this hotel's records is also to take place. 1880 also saw Philip purchase the land known as 41,43,45 Holt Stret Sydney.copy of the conveyence papers is in the family history file.
In 1884, Philipbought the Summer Hill Hotel at No 1 Lackey Street Summer Hill. It was here he died. This hotel is still in existance. (2010 Jan.) And (1997) is to be given statutory protection in the local environment plan as a heritage building. Research into the records of this hotel was done by the Ashfield & District Historical Society as part of their research into local hotels. Philip bought the hotel in 1884, but didn't take over the licence till 1894. Nora Peek from the Ashfield Hist Soc, indicated in her work that the McQuellin family ceased to have an interest in the hotel after 1913. It is here in the hotel that Philip died on 31.08.1897. Philip's mother in law, Abigail McNeill also passed away at the Summer Hill residence in July of 1894.
Information recieved in June 1998 indicates that research material is available from the ANU Archives where the Tooth Breweries Archives are held and also the Mitchell Library in Sydney.(Information Supplied by the current owner of the Hotel, Brian Burgess). Also in the Ashfield Historical Society Journal No 8The advertisement for the sale of the hotel has been reproduced, as has an advertisement placed by Philips brother James who was the proprietor in 1904. (See photographic file on McQuellins)
It is noted that in 1892 Philip was living in Summer Hill, It was here his son William was born on 27.02.1892 . The name of the home was 'Erith' which was No4 Gower Street. His occupation at the time was gentleman. It was obviously at a time before he was the hotel keeper at the Summer Hill hotel. By 1894 he had moved to Lackey Street and to the Hotel.
Philip and Ellen had six children, Philip Patrick, Edward, William, Maurice, Marie and Mary Emmaline. Philip died in 1897 and is buried in the McQuellin family graves at the Sydney-Rookwood Cemetery.
