Early 19th century St. Louis MO McShanes

My ancestor Bernard McShane (b ca 1828) emigrated from Ireland (county unknown) sometime before 1852 and apparently came ashore somewhere in Canada (city and province unknown). By January, 1860 he was living in St. Louis, Mo with his wife Caroline (Kilroy) and their children, but by 1864 they had moved to Windsor, Canada. During their short time in St. Louis, four of the McShanes' children died of whooping cough and dysentery. This may explain why they left St. Louis, but I would like to figure out why they even went there in the first place. I'm guessing they had family there. I would like to hear from anyone who has early-to-mid 19th century McShanes living in the St. Louis, MO area.
