La Pointe is a good French Canadian name. My husband's McShanes went from Co. Monaghan in Ireland to Montreal and stayed there and at least one married a French Canadian. I don't have any connection to your people. But anyone in New England could have come from Canada instead of from directly across the ocean. I'd suggest you check Quebec records as well as other places.
