McShanes in Ontario, Canada in the mid-1800s

My ancestor Bernard McShane was born ca 1829-30 in Ireland (county unknown). By 1860 Bernard and his wife Caroline (Kilroy) were living in St. Louis, Missouri with their children. The 1860 census states that the three eldest McShane children (Francis, James and Bridget) were born in "Canada". I have been unable to find any clue as to where in Canada the McShanes once lived, but I have been told that a reference to "Canada" in 1860 would have meant Ontario. I would like to hear from anyone who has McShane ancestors in Ontario in the mid 1800s.
