I am not descended form the McVoy family, but I have an ancestral aunt who married into a McVoy family.
CATHERINE ("Kate")CATER, my great-great grandmother's half-sister, was born c1842 in Harrison County, Texas. Her father was EDWIN CATER and her mother, his second wife, CLARISSA TARLTON, formerly of Monroe and Conecuh Counties, AL.She apparently went to live with her half-brother, EDWIN LAWRENCE CATER, a merchant of Milton, Santa Rosa Co, FL, in the 1850s and there married CHARLES MCVOY.He is shown in the 1860 census of Stata Rosa County, FL, age 26, born FL, with KATE and a JOSEPH MCVOY, age 21, born FL.CHARLES is listed as a "mechanist" and JOSEPH as a clerk.According to family letters, during the Civil War, CHARLES and KATE CATER MCVOY moved to Montgomery, AL, and lived with her aunt, MATILDA (Mrs. John) POWELL.Mr. POWELL was a carriage maker.Family letters reveal they had two children, "TEENIE" and "BELLA."A letter dated August, 1864, indicates "TEENIE" had died and CHARLES MCVOY was in very bad health. He apparently died, for in 1870, KATE CATER MCVOY was still living with her aunt, but was now married to ROBERT GILMER.Also, living with her was ISABELLA MCVOY, age 11.
