Don't know if this is helpful or not - there was a Thomas MArtin McWhinney in Franklin, Ohio, dates 1823-1906, who served as a pastor there in the 1870s. The only reason I am writing is that I noticed the name Rankin in your question; I don't think it is a common name and I did note some Rankins in the cemetery at Franklin. A connection?????
