John McWHINNEY: Our subject is a native of this county, his birth having occurred June 13, 1835. His parents were John and Nancy McWHINNEY, the former a native of the North of Ireland, while the latter was born in PA. John McWHINNEY, Sr., emigrated when a young man to the United States, and in 1829 came to this county and made a settlement on the farm where our subject now lives. --- By his marriage to Nancy WOLF, he became the father of five children, of whom three are living, viz: Mary J., the widow of John WELTY, Margaret, the widow of Christian KAYLOR, and our subject. The husband and father departed this life in 1863. --- Sept. 1, 1861, on the outbreak of the late war, he enlisted in the Union army and became a member of Co.F, 19th Ohio Inf., while his regiment became a part of the Army of the Cumberland. --- Oct. 9, 1861, Miss Elizabeth HALL, daughter of Samuel and Susan HALL, became the wife of our subject. Her parents were early settlers of Sugar Creek Twp. --- Mr. and Mrs. McWHINNEY have become parents of six children: Carrie E., Sterling J., Cullen H., Columbia V., Minnie H. and Jessie N.
