I am trying to place the James Hyland found in 1790 Kent County, MD census with his parents. According to 1830 Kent County, MD census James Hyland was living with his youngest son, Henry Miles Hyland and is listed in the 70-80 yr. old age bracket making his born bet. 1750-1760. James Hyland died in Sept 1832 and left a will in Kent County, mentioning only two sons and two daughters: James Hyland, Jr. & Henry Miles Hyland, Ann Hurtt and Kesiah (Keziah) Love. In the 1790 Kent County census John Hyland is also listed. This John Hyland is Lt. John Hyland b. 27 Nov 1746 and married twice, 1st to Martha Tilden in 1778 and 2nd to Elizabeth Worrell in 1786. This Lieut. John Hyland settled in Kent county, MD some years before the Revolutionary War and at the out break of that war he was Lieut. of the "Minute Company" of Kent County, which was under the command of Capt. William Henry, who marched from the said county January 29, 1776 and was stationed in Northhampton County VA on Mary 29, 1776 their headquarters were at the same place, MD Archives Vol. 11, pg. 298 Vol 18, pg. 646. Lieut. John Hyland was elected Vestryman of the I.U. Parish at Chestertown, MD. on May 4, 1796 and served in that capacity for several years. In an article entitled " Washington College, 1783, Chestertown, Maryland", MD Hist Mag. Vol 6, p. 176 he is mentioned as having built a stage for the use of the students of that college. Now Lt. John Hyland (b. 1746) was the son of Capt. John Hyland of Cecil County who from his father's will was left land on the Susquehanna River. Capt. John Hyland's brother Nicholas Hyland aka Col. Nicholas Hyland b. 1709 and married to Elizabeth Johnson, from his father's will he received land on the Elk River of Cecil County. Now both Capt. John Hyland and his brother Col. Nicholas Hyland were the children of Nicholas Hyland b. abt. 1683 and his wife Millicent Johnson. This Nicholas Hyland b. abt. 1683 was the son of the immigrant John Hyland (1640-1695) and his 2nd wife Jane Johnson. However, according to the history of this HYLAND family, John & Jane Johnson Hyland had another son, John Hyland and it seems nothing is known of his family. My feeling is that the James Hyland b. bet. 1750-1760 may belong to the John Hyland side of the family that nothing is known about. There are Hyland's still living in Kent County today that can be traced back to this James Hyland. If anyone knows anything about the John Hyland side of the family that does not seem to be documented I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. Notify Administrator about this message?
