My gg grandfather Joseph Powell(b. abt. 1854-1860) m. Jane (Janie) Cunning on 14 Feb 1881. There are 2 records: 1 at St. Dennis in Galena, Kent County, Maryland and 1 at Holy Cross in Dover, Delaware. Jane’s father is listed as James Cunning in both records, but her mother is listed as Ann Flanigan at Dover and listed as Annie Cunning at Galena.
Joseph and Jane Powell had 5 children, according to the St. Dennis Baptismal records (thanks to www.lalley.com !) The first 2 births list the mother as Jane Flanigan ; the last 3 births list her as Jane Cunning or Cuning. I can find no reference to a James Cunning in Maryland or Delaware. Neither can I find anything about a James Flanigan (other than listed below) in Kent Co. Maryland or Kent Co. Delaware, if that is who Jane’s father is.
One theory I have is that Jane’s parents (maybe adoptive parents?) are James Flanigan and Annie Mullen (there is an 1858 marriage record in Cecil County, Maryland for them). Some things that lead me to this theory are:
* Daniel Flanigan is listed on the marriage bond for Joseph Powell and Janie Cunning in Delaware
* Daniel Flanagan, son of James Flanagan and Ann O’Mullen, baptized in 1860 at St. Dennis in Galena
* Rose Ann Flanigan, dau. of James Flanigan and Ann Mullen, baptized in 1861 at St. Dennis in Galena
* Rosa A. Flanigan married George Johnson in 1881 (there are 2 records; 1 in Galena and 1 in Dover)
* Joseph Powell is living with Rosa and George Johnson in the 1910 New Castle Co., DE census
Is anybody familiar with these families or does anyone have any idea how I should go about trying to find more sources that will help me discover the true identity of Jane’s parents? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
