William Potter born abt 1730 in England. One of his Gr.Gr grandson through Fanny Deuel and Nathan Potter, wrote a book of poems, titled "Armeggedon",published about 1904-8. In the books forward, a brief family history of William Potter is given. The author notes William Potter, came from England as a young man, married an English girl named Nancy Davis, both died of a plague in Baltimore Maryland in 1780.This couple had at least one son. William Potter, born 1767 Maryland. This William Potter, joined the 10th Virginia Company a Foot, attached to Captain Nathan Lamm, at age 13 yrs in 1780. The immigrating William Potter, born about 1730 England, left London in March of 1752, on the ship "Thames" with Capt.James Dobbins. Arrived in Annapolis, Anne Arundel,Maryland April 1752. This was a felon ship, according to The Kings Passengers List to Maryland and Virginia, by Peter Wilson Coldham,pg 134. According to Maryland Early Census Index,1755,pg 120, William Potter is a resident of Anne Arundel, Maryland. By, 1778, William Potter of Anne Arundel, Maryland, takes the Fidelity Oath, page 021, of the Fidelity Oath lists for Maryland. By 1780,William Potter and wife Nancy Davis Potter, are died of the plague in Baltimore, Maryland. This Potter line does not seem to connect with the Potters of CT/RI, nor the Potters of Choptank Hundred,Caroline, Maryland,Somerset,Maryland or Worchester,Maryland. Some years ago, I came across a DAR,reference to William Potter of Maryland and his wife, noting they give assistance to the Colonial cause and were listed as patriots, but have missed placed reference. There is also and indication that William & Nancy Davis-Potter may have had two older sons, but have misplaced this reference also. The one known son, William Potter born 1767 MD or VA, married Rachel Horner, their oldest child Nathan Potter was born 1795 Fredricksburg, Baltimore, Maryland. In the 1790 Census, pg 227 William Potter and wife are in Fredricksbug, Baltimore, Maryland. The family is enumerated with the Gillen Davis family and Francis Davis family on page 227. Could these be brothers to young William's mother Nancy Davis? By 1810, William & Racheal Horner-Potter and young family are enumerated in Fairfax,Virginia.Page 214 The family is listed close with other Potter families in Fairfax,Virginia for 1810.
