There were a number of Thomas Bruffs on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Colonial days. I've found only one who lived in Somerset county. Thomas did, indeed, own a portion of a land patent named Caldicut, originally received when he married Elizabeth Scott, widow of Stevens White. As is documented by Ruth Dryden, he bought and sold portions of Caldicutt throughout the rest of his life, at one point owning 250 acres of the 500 acres in the orginal 1667 Caldicutt patent. On August 23, 1761, Thomas Bruff married Elizabeth (Betty) Scott, widow of Stevens White, at Coventry Parish, Rehobeth, Somerset, Maryland. On Aug. 30, 1777 Thomas Bruff was commissioned as Major in Princess Ann Battalion of Somerset County. On Dec. 11, 1781 Son Benjamin Bruff was born to Thomas and Betty. Benjamin was the youngest of eight siblings: he had five brothers and two sisters. I have no idea of what happened to Benjamin, but I have a plethora of information about Thomas and Betty's first son, John, who is my 3rd great grandfather. I presently reorganizing and reviewing my data in preparation for yet another assault on the Maryland State Archives in an attempt to learn the parentage of Thomas of Caldicott.
