Mean Family Genealogy Forum
Thank you, Patrick, for this information. Much appreciated.
Marie, I believe, would have been Robert Joseph Mean's oldest sister, his senior by about 11 years. I believe that Robert remarried Bridget Mahony of County Kerry, Ireland, after his wife Eliza passed away, likely sometime after 1865 but before the 1871 census. Thomas and Bridget continued to live in Essex. However, sometime between 1871 and 1881, they immigrated to Canada: Robert; his step-mother Bridget; step-siblings Dennis, Mary A, Daniel and Ellen Mahony; his father, Thomas; and half-siblings, Joseph and Peter Mean. They show up in the 1881 Canadian Census living in Carleton County, New Brunswick. Their last name is transcribed as 'Mechan'). Robert's other siblings from Thomas' first marriage - Thomas, Maria, Naomi, William and Sarah - stayed behind in England with the youngest going to live with either family or friends. It is also likely that some of the children from Thomas' first marriage would have gone to live with others well before the move to Canada. For example, looking at the information you provided, it would seem that Maria went to live with her Uncle, George Brown (publisher), and his family sometime between the taking of the 1861 and 1871 English census. Whether she was the niece of George Brown or his wife - listed as one 'David' Brown and likely a transcription error of 'Didrea'? - I do not know at this time. In 1871, and at the age of 21, she was unmarried and working as a confectioner's assistant while living with the Brown family in London.
