I noticed your message on the Mearns Gen Forum. I don't think I can cast any positive light on your family, but my interest is in my 3x g grandmother who was Elizabeth Mearns, bap Benholm in 1788. Her father was John Mearns, mother Margaret Robertson. There are, as you probably, know many of the Mearns clan originating from Johnshaven - baptised in Benholm, all connected with the sea and probably all related in some way or another if one goes back a few generations.

You may have a note of the monumental inscriptions in Benholm Churchyard, but if not here are one or two which may interest you:

"1802. by Isobel Mearns, h David Largie shipmaster Johnshaven 30.3.1800 76 (his parents and Largie whitefisher Johnshaven & Elspet Mearns also here int). single masted ship in medallion"

"1816. single masted ship in rope medallion, anchors. by And Mearns shipmaster Montrose imo fa John Mearns shipmaster Johnshaven d 1815 73 . . . . . his wife Marg(aret.......(broken)"

"by David & And Mearns shipmasters in Montrose imo gmo Margt Blues d 7.1.1819 60, gfa David Mearns 27.4.1841 89, bro & sister both d inf. And Mearns d at sea on or about 24.12.1845 34, their mo Jean Mearns 23.7.1850 65. David Mearns shipmaster 20.11.1852 43"

I hope some of the above will be of interest. If you come across any information about my Elizabeth's family I would be pleased to hear it.

Brian M
