Hello to All:
Who was the earliest known Medici?
Christopher Hibbert's book "The House of Medici" identifies
one Averardo, a Knight-Vassal of Charlemagne whose valiant
deed in dispatching a fearsome Giant was allowed to
commemorate his victory on his dented shield.
These dents became the "palle" or balls on the Medici Coat
Various books identify Giambuono de Medici as the earliest
member of this family, active in the Mugello in 1176.
Hibbert's book goes on to give more prosaic, alternative
vocations to the earliest Medici ancestor, perhaps a
charcoal burner or a brewer of medicinal potions.
Can anyone clarify the above?
