Hi Jody:
I had to work on this one. Overall, I got a nice run.
I research the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 12,800,000 surviving rcds for abt 70% of Irish counties. Rcds are increasingly sparse B4 1840, rare B4 1800. Cos. Donegal and Derry were recently added to the database.
Note 1 - Without a KNOWN county, the chance of an ancestor's rcds NOT being in this database is AT LEAST 30%.
Note 2 - Only 1/2 of Co. Cork's rcds are in this database.
Note 3 - The RC church kept control over most parish rcds from Tipperary (north). These are ONLY available thru the Tipperary Family History Research center at a substantial fee (regardless of outcome).
For Ann(e) Meehan D 1919 (exact), Co. Leitrim, I found 1 civil rcd, Drumshanbo district.
For Tho(mas) Meehan D 1889 (exact), Co. Leitrim, I found 1 civil rcd, Drumshanbo district.
A view of the detailed D rcds MAY show their exact DOB as well as their parent's names.
For Marg(aret) Meehan B 1881 (exact), Drumshanbo DT, Co. Leitrim, with a father forenamed Tho(mas), I rcd.
For Ber(nard) Meehan B 1883 ditto, I found 1 rcd.
For Eliz(abeth) Meehan B ???? ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1886.
For Cat(herine) Meehan B 1889 ditto, I found 1 rcd.
For Tho(mas) Meehan B ???? ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1877.
For Mary Meehan B ???? ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1875.
For Pat(rick) Meehan B ???? ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1874.
For Tho(mas) Meehan M 1872 +/- 2 yrs, Co. Leitrim, I found 1 rcd in 1873, Kiltubbrid RC parish.
For Ann Doherty M 1873 (exact), I found ditto. These rcds are highly likely to be for your ancestors. A view of the detailed rcds should show if they married each other. If so, then the rcds SHOULD reveal their parents' names as well aso other info. This is useful in identifying earlier generation's rcds (below).
For Ann Doherty B 1852 +/- 4 yrs, Co. Leitrim, with the father's forename unknown, I found 4 rcds: 1848 Cloonclare, 1854 Kiltubbrid, 1854 Kiltubbrid, and 1855 Cloonclare RC parishes. Father's forenames were Michael, Patrick, Garret, and James respectively.
For Thomas Meehan B 1850 ditto, I found 7 rcds: 2-1846, 1850, 2-1851, 1853, and 1854. 3 in 1846, 1851, and 1854 were in Cloonclare RC parish. Father's forename for these 3 were John, Michael, and Francis respectively.
A view of the parent's B rcds above, should show their parents' names. Once you have these, you have identified an earlier generation and can search for their genealogical rcds using the above techniques.
Google the Foundation's name to lead you to this database. Register, opt to be notified as rcds are added and browse. Pls post your search results to my genforum msg.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
