I'm so glad that you've responded to this post! My husband's family were Meehan's who came from Walton le Dale. I have the census records for them in Walton le Dale for 1871 and 1881. I know that John Meehan married Margaret Cox in 1889.The rest of his siblings and his father came to the US in the 1890's. They settled in Cumberland, Rhode Island. I have done much research on the Meehan's and have quite a few English and US records. I learned that John Meehan (known as Jack to his siblings)and Margaret had a daughter, Rose. I found Margaret and her daughter living in Walton le Dale in the 1901 census. It appears that John lived here in the US until his death in about 1947, while Margaret and Rose stayed in England. The William Meehan who wrote letters back to England could have been John's brother. William was born in 1870 and died in Rhode Island in 1915. John & William's youngest brother, Thomas, was my husband's grandfather. I'd enjoy sharing with you what I have on the Meehans here in the US. My husband and his family would be interested in learning why John left his wife and daughter in England, and what happened to Rose and her mother. The letters that William wrote must be very interesting. If you care to email me directly, my address is [email protected]. Thanks, and I hope to hear from you soon.
