Hello Norma:
well, i certainly hope this is the elusive link to my brick wall I have been stuck at for many many years. My gggrandfather is a Charles Johnson who family lore has him leaving Hamburg area in the mid 1850's to escape persecution. He aparently changed his name from meier once in North America. I have an Annie/Anna Meier attached to him from my earliest record found (marriage record to Sophia Burton in Detroit 1870 with Anna signing as witness). Anna appears to have lived with him and his family in Essex Ontario (by Windsor) until her death sometime after 1880. According to records I have found she was born sometime around 1806 in Germany. In my line, I have Charles (who also went by Christien), Frederick (Charles' son), Thomas, Josiah, Annie, Charles as his other children. I have been told there is a William somewhere in the mix as well.
If there is a link between our two Charles' WOW to say the least. It would be great if indeed the link is there. Would love to compare notes. Have recently been told by a cousin that family lore through her ggrandma Ellen (married to Josiah, commonly called Joe) is that Charles' and most likely his family were essentially smuggled out of Germany somewhere by the British after he or his family royally ticked off the government/royalty. this could explain why I can't find any passenger records anywhere!! I also have learned that Charles Meier/Johnson left Germany as a person following the jewish faith, but changed to Methodist once in N. America as being jewish anywhere in the world then was not something to be openly practicing nor advertising.
You are welcome to check out my ancestry acct at richard/johnson/plamondon/rolston at I haven't had a chance to update my site in a while so some of the information I have mentioned above is not on it yet.
Looking forward to hearing from you!!
best regards

dawn Richard (nee Johnson)
