Daniel, thank you so much for the information. To the best of my knowledge Chrisopher Columbus Melton and Nancy Pauline Mitchell had 5 sons:
John (b. abt 1853 - 1860 census of Lauderdale Cnty,MS)
Joseph B. (b. abt 1855 - 1860 census of Laudedale Cnty MS, & 1880 census of Jasper Cnty, MS)
William Columbus (b. abt 1862 - 1880 census of Jasper Cnty, MS)
Monrow (b. abt 1867 - 1880 census of Jasper Cnty, MS)
Asaria (b. abt 1870 - 1880 census of Jasper Cnty, MS)
You mention that you can understand why they named their first two sons John and Joseph -- John being Christopher Columbus Melton's father's name and Joseph being Nancy Pauline Mitchell's father's name. Then perhaps it follows that William Columbus Melton was named after Christopher Columbus Melton's grandfather - William Melton (b. abt 1803 in SC).
I am descended from William Columbus Melton.
I have no further information on John except for what is cited above.
As for Joseph B., according to the 1880 census cited, he was a 23 year old single farmer - head of household.William Columbus and his wife, Hester Arrilla _____?, were living with him at the time of that census.I have no further information on him.Sure would like to know what the "B" in Joseph B. Melton stands for.
I believe that "Monrow" is the Bill Monroe Melton that you mention.Thank you - I have already been able to find much information on him.
You cite Asaria as a daughter, I have this person as a "male" "son" according to the census cited above.Do you have any information that shows Asaria to be a female?Because of the misspelling of Monroe (Monrow) on the census cited, among other things, I have a hunch that this name should really be "Azeriah".
Interestingly enough, I am unable to find Christopher Columbus and Nancy Pauline on any 1870 census records.Do you know where they were in 1870?
Thanks,
Kenny
