In researching Durham Tennyson Melton I did find that his wife, Josephine Freer (aka Hipp after her guardian Hipp due to the demise of her parents), had a "brother" who was a short-lived outlaw in Alabama. He was caught and hanged after a short career. See: Hipp and Kelley.

Hipp's partner Kelley, was apparently kin as well.
Then there is the history of the Meltons after whom "Melton's Bluff" in AL was named.

The Black Warrior's Path. Other sites too, the Muscle Shoals Melton (John) apparently made his living hijacking boat cargo on the muscle shoals. Think this was early 1800's. He was Irish and married a Cherokee.
