Susan,
My 3rd great-grandparents are Nathan Melton and Elizabeth/Betsy, I believed for along time that Betsy's maiden name was Hanson but I am having doubts now. I got her name off of a handwritten marriage record of my GG-grandfather, Henry Harrison Melton. The WPA transcribed it as 'Hannon'. I saw it as 'Hanson'. I believe her name might have been Hammond though. Henry was 76 yrs. old in 1894 when he had to give his mother's name for the record. I don't know if age would have anything to do w/ it but to me it's a consideration.
Nathan & Betsy's oldest child, Mary Polly Melton was born in KY, not sure of the county, abt. 1810. Through Henry's obituary Nathan & Betsy are found in Pulaski Co., KY in Mar 1818 when Henry was born then moved to Lawrence Co., Indiana in Dec. that same year. Nathan & Betsy are found in the 1820-1860 census records for Lawrence Co., IN then Elizabeth/Betsy is living w/ a daughter in 1870. Nathan born in VA abt. 1785 & Betsy born abt. 1793 in NC, some census state VA for her.
I am almost positive that the 1807 Wayne Co., KY marriage record between a Nathan Melton & Betsy Hammond is my ggg-grandparents. The record states a John Melton and George Hammond giving consent to marry as my Betsy would have only been about 14 yrs. old. It all fits, I just have to find some way to verify it. I know I stated all of this in my earlier post, but just to help put it in perspective.
I would love to know your ancestry! I have collected so much stuff on the Meltons in KY and I don't even know if they're connected to mine but knowing who went where, who they married etc. would give me some clues! Very little so far. Thanks! Carla
