James Polk Melton, Illinois Melton Mystery

It has come to my attention that my 2nd Great Grandfather, James Polk Burkitt, of Wayne County, Illinois was in fact born a Melton. James was born in 1847. Sometime between 1847 and 1860 the parents of James either passed away or gave him up for adoption. James was taken in by Joseph Burkitt and his wife Lovinia. Family stories indicate that James considered these two to be his parents, and in fact, adopted the Burkitt name. He is found living with them in an 1860 census. In an 1855 census I found a Mary Melton living next door to Joseph Burkitt. I am wondering if anyone researching the Melton line, or belonging to the Melton line knows of this story?
