In Reply to: Thomas J. Melton; 1890 Civil War Veteran's Census, Missouri by Brad Melton of 4152

The Thomas J. Melton who lived in Sparta was born 1835 to Jacob & Lucy (Matthews) Melton. He married 3 Aug 1853 in Cannon County Tennessee Sarah Catherine "Kate" Turner 1 Mar 1834 - 15 Sep 1900. They were in Douglas County, Missouri in 1866 but in Christian County by 1870. Tom and Kate are buried in Sparta Cemetery. Their children were: Nancy Ann (Melton) Cates 1857 - 1936, Bertha Melton born 1861 last found on 1880 census, Parolee Imogene (Melton) Isbell 1863 - 1920, James B. Melton 9 Dec 1867 - 3 Nov 1951, Josie (Melton) Roberts born Dec 1876 moved to Tacoma Washington, and Charles L. Melton born 1879. After Kate's death, Tom married Mary Jane (Pendleton) Melton 10 Jan 1828 - 31 Dec 1906, widow of Tom's oldest brother, James Mattison Melton 1 Jan 1821 - 1 Dec 1872. As far as we have been able to determine this family was not closely related to the Thomas Melton of northern Taney County, if at all.
