MELVILLE, George from Sydney Aust, to California USA
I am hoping SKS can assist me to break down a brickwall and find a ship George Melville sailed on to California USA from Sydney Australia, between 1839 and 1850. George Melville was born in Old Sydney Town, in Colonial Australia on 21st of November 1815, to convict Robert MELVILLE.
George's father Robert MELVILLE was born 1770 in Calton, Barony, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, and died 16 May 1853 in Sydney. He married ELIZABETH CRAIG, daughter of JOHN CRAIG and ELIZABETH KIRKLAND.She was born 30 Dec 1768 in Calton, Barony, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, and died 31 Aug 1841 in Sydney.
Robert MELVILLE, Enlisted in the 74th Highlanders Regiment of Foot in 1787 1791: Living at Calton, Barony, Glasgow 1801: Prisoner in Perth. Entry relating to crime of Robbery and Theft. Date of trial 16 April 1801. Verdict Guilty. Verdict comments:Guilty in terms of own confession. Sent Transportation for life.Note Sentenced on 20 April 1801.(JC11/45 f45r) Minute Book 4 Apr-20 Oct 1801 NA of Scotland.
Robert MELVILLE:- 1803: Tried in Perth not Ayr on 20 April 1801 for life, arrived per HMS "Glatton". The "Glatton" was a Naval vessel arrived on 11 March 1803 from England, carrying 387 convicts with some free settlers
Robert and Elizabeth MELVILLE (nee Craig's) son George Melville, married Widow Margaret Crahan (nee Scanlan) in Sydney, Australia in 1836.Over the years they had three children, the last Alice born in 1840.Then George Melville appears to disappear off the map.His wife Margaret, begins to have children with a Michael Madigan between 1842 and 1848.Margaret lives with Michael as his common law wife on his property at Hornsby north of Sydney Town, then in 1851 they marry.
The missing husband George Melville was nowhere to be found, however I did find a marriage of a George Melville marrying a Mary Ann Russell in 1842 in the Sydney suburb of Hunters Hill (if this is him, he would have been a bigamist). Then today, while looking through my Sydney Morning Herald CD, I found an Index Card announcing:-
Death of George MELVILLE - A native of Sydney - Died on 1st January 1851 in California USA. This article appeared in the Death Notices of the Newspaper on22nd April 1851.
One can assume that he had sailed to the USA in search of his fortune. If he is the George Melville, who married Mary Ann Russell, she may have sailed with him.So I am hoping that SKS can point me in the direction to find what ship the elusive George MELVILLE sailed on to California. Also, who was his life in California, were there any children born? Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Janice
