Hi everyone,
I found your site and I am very excited!
I am the great-great-granddaughter of Daniel Mendoza. I live in Yass, NSW, just outside of Canberra, Australia. My mother, who lives in Queensland, has some information on Daniel, lots of anecdotal stuff. For instance: the coin struck when the King of Spain made him a Don (for saving his life). Daniel gave one each to his sons, Joseph (my great-grandfather) and Aaron(?). There is one in a museum in Sydney, on permanent loan from the family. His world championship belt was in the window of Mick Simmons' Sports Store in Sydney for many years. Simmons was a grandson of Daniel's. The belt disappeared. I will talk to my mother about more details.
Meanwhile, any information you can give me about Daniel would be greatly appreciated! We have copies of some newspaper clippings, also - did you know he was called the Gentle Shepherd?
Look forward to hearing from you,
Megan
PS. Feel free to email me directly, but I will check back with this list every now and then.
