According to a book I once read, the DeMendozas of Spain were (and I quote) "one of the great Converso families of Spain", along with other families such as the DeGuzmans. So, at least some branches of the family bearing the name were/are Jewish somewhere along the way. P.S. I am not sure about my family which I trace from Puerto Rico and am still doing research.
