Hi all,

This is a bit of a cross posting from the Whitsett forum in response to one of Oleen's postings and to add my own congratulations on having a Menees forum established.

My gggrandfather was Dr. William Crawford Whitsett (b. August 3, 1812 in KY) who first appears in any record I and others have been able to find in Glasgow, Barren County, KY on December 15, 1836 when he posted a marriage bond to wed Elizabeth Lee Edmunds. He died January 9, 1882 in Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas.

I have no records from the period linking him to the Logan County Whitsett’s. However, one of William Crawford Whitsett’s daughters (Mary Jane) noted that her paternal great-grandparents were Gen. William and Emily (Haden) Whitsett (History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas. The Goodspeed Publishing Company. Chicago. 1889). Similarly, the Annals of a Scotch-Irish Family by William H. Whitsitt (The American Historical Magazine and Tennessee Historical Society Quarterly, Vol. IX, 1904) states that Dr. William C. “Whitsitt” of Fannin County, Texas was his son (page 380, 382). This General William Whitsett, Jr. would have been the son of William Whitsitt, Sr. and Ellen Menees (page 380). The book “Men Whom I Remember” by George D. Blakey discusses Gen. William Whitsett, Jr. an relations to a fair degree, but doesn’t mention William Crawford at all.

Other family writings refer to “cousins” with the last name of Comfort in Mississippi. Eleanor Whitsett, a daughter of Gen. William and Emily, married William Comfort and Gen. William evidently died while living with her at or near Canton, Mississippi in 1842. ( under Whitsett).

I’m interested in any further information—hopefully contemporaneous--that would link William Crawford to the Whitsett/Haden lineage or provide another direction. For that matter, any history related to these families, no matter how trivial, is always welcome.

I have a fair bit of information regarding William Crawford Whitsett and Elizabeth Lee Edmunds, generally but not limited to the Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas vicinity descendants and ancestors that I would be happy to share. There are a number of Haden, Blakey and Whitsetts in Fannin Co.TX in the 1850-1900 period and probably others I've just not tied back to the Logan/Barren Co. region of KY yet.

William Hayden Whitsett
